OJAI : Panel OKs Center in Libbey Park

The design and location of a new building in Libbey Park--a subject that bounced around City Hall for 10 months--had rough sailing through the Ojai Planning Commission for the third time Wednesday.
Chairman Lynn McConnell said it would be like throwing up a red flag to use redwood for the building, when old-growth redwoods are endangered. He said cedar would better resist vandalism.
The flat-roofed multipurpose building, with an observation deck for video cameras, will serve at least nine groups that regularly use the park for events. Most of them prefer the final selection near the northern tennis courts.
If the City Council approves the final plans next week, which include an arbor extension and exterior lighting, the club hopes to have the building up before the 1991 Ojai Tennis Tournament in April.
Others planning to use it are the Ventura County Symphony, Ojai Valley Mexican Fiesta, Illusions Theatre, Bowlful of Blues, Royal Shakespeare Revels, Ojai Beauty Pageant and the Ojai Independence Day Committee.
