Here are the candidates running for three seats on the Fullerton Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees in the Nov. 6 election.

Robert N. Hathaway

Age: 61.

Occupation: Incumbent/teacher.

Background: Has been a member of the board for five years. A former attorney and a Fullerton resident for 32 years. Has been active in organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Elks and the Boys Club.

Issues: Wants to guarantee that the district’s education funds directly benefit students and to increase the accountability of the district.

John J. Marcinko

Age: 58.

Occupation: High school counselor.

Background: Has been a high school counselor for 20 years. Has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in health and physical education. Created the first gymnastic program at North Texas State University and at Valencia High School.

Issues: Wants to provide a fair and equitable salary adjustment for both classified and certificated employees; also wants to improve the district’s athletic program for girls and increase technical education in the district.

Robert A. Singer

Age: 47.

Occupation: Incumbent/manager, communications programs.

Background: A trustee for 10 years, has a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Issues: Wants to continue to enhance educational opportunities and student performance, maintain fiscal responsibility, help develop effective approaches for dealing with increasing enrollment of limited-English-speaking students and improve the transition of students from the various feeder junior high schools to district high schools.

Marilyn Buchi

Age: 51.

Occupation: Incumbent/community volunteer.

Background: Has been a board member for six years. Has served on the Delegate Assembly of the California School Boards Assn.

Issues: Wants to maintain quality education for every student and wants responsible spending of district funds during a time of a still-uncertain funding situation in Sacramento.
