Boundaries May Be Redrawn

The Los Angeles County Committee on School District Reorganization will hold two public hearings on possible redrawing of school district boundaries in Rowland Heights and Walnut.

The hearings are in response to a group of Walnut parents whose children attend schools in the Rowland Unified School District. The parents want district lines redrawn so their children can attend school in the Walnut Valley Unified School District.

About 1,800 students at Nogales High School, Rincon Intermediate School and Oswalt Elementary School would be affected. Here is the hearing schedule:

* Thursday at 7 p.m., at Rincon Intermediate School, 2800 Hollingsworth St., West Covina. Information: (818) 965-1696.

* Oct. 2 at 7 p.m., at Suzanne Middle School, 525 Suzanne Road, Walnut. Information: (714) 595-1261.

After the hearings, the Los Angeles Committee for School Board Reorganization will decide whether to approve the changes.

Walnut Unified, with 12,235 students, serves parts of West Covina, Diamond Bar and Walnut. Its student body is 46.4% Anglo, 24.3% Asian, 18% Latino, 4.9% black and 6.4% other.

Rowland Unified has 19,000 students and serves all of Rowland Heights and portions of La Puente, West Covina and Walnut. Its student body is 46.1% Latino, 24.3% Anglo, 12.1% Asian, 9.5% Filipino, 7.4% black and .6% other.
