North and South Koreans sang arm-in-arm, Chinese fans greeted their long-estranged Taiwanese cousins and a huge cheer went up for 54 Kuwaiti athletes during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games at Beijing.

A speech honored the Asian Olympic council’s late president, Fahd al-Ahmed al-Saba, a Kuwaiti sheik who died during the Iraqi invasion.
