LETTERS IN VIEW : Times Change All Over, Not Just in the Catskills

Josh Getlin’s tasteful, well-researched article on the Catskills was a realistic account of our changing times in America, which, although sad, are truly inevitable (“Borscht Belt Tightens in the Catskills,” Aug. 26). After all, Harry Golden, Myron Cohen and Sam Levenson are long gone, and, locally, Mickey Katz and Billy Gray, owner of “Billy Gray’s Band Box” also are deceased. In short: Shiva (mourning) for a facet of our folklore/history that will probably never surface again.

After digesting the article, I actually felt transformed to Lindy’s in New York, Fritzel’s in Chicago and Wolfie’s in Miami Beach, but for the sake of closeness, I’ll opt for Canter’s here on Fairfax Avenue. Perhaps a revival by some of the living entertainers mentioned would pump some life back into this unique bit of nostalgia.
