Oxnard Issue Should City Change Its...

I spend a lot of time and money in Oxnard, and many, many other people would too if they were aware of the city. But the name is a turnoff. It’s not doing justice to the area. Oxnard’s name is an anchor. A public referendum will most assuredly show a preponderance favoring a new and more euphemistic name, like Mandalay of California or Mandalay Beach of California. It would tend to reflect more of the beauty of the area. Oxnard, unfortunately, is the wrong label to accomplish that end. I’m most confident a majority of the residents, based on those I’ve spoken to, think the name is dragging them down. The city fathers should arrange a public referendum to let people choose a new name. It’s a great label by the original settlers, but it doesn’t fit in with the modern-day lifestyle in Southern California and especially in this area with marinas and beautiful weather. If you were to go anywhere in the country and say you were from Oxnard, it just wouldn’t cut it.
