Gangsters claimed the No. 1 spot at the box office during a sleepy moviegoing weekend. The critically admired “GoodFellas,” from Warner Bros. and director Martin Scorsese, had ticket sales of $6.4 million on 1,070 screens, for a per-screen average of $6,168. The Mafia saga (running time: 145 minutes) starring Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci pushed “Postcards From the Edge” into second place, but just barely. Starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine, Columbia Pictures’ “Postcards” grossed $6.3 million on 1,322 screens, for $4,765 per-screen--a 20% drop.

* After opening the New York Film Festival, “Miller’s Crossing,” the gangster tale by the Coen Brothers, grossed an impressive $28,202 over just two days in one N.Y. theater.
