America West in Talks to Buy Shuttle: The Phoenix-based airline confirmed that it is in talks about the possible purchase of the Pan Am Shuttle and for the backing of major aircraft manufacturers and leasing companies to finance the deal. The New York Times reported that Guiness Peat Aviation, the world’s largest aircraft-leasing firm, and International Aero Engines, a consortium of engine manufacturers, would finance America West’s purchase of the shuttle from Pan Am Corp. in exchange for the airline’s agreement to buy or lease more than 100 Airbus Industrie jets.
