Walker Rushes University Past Foothill, 24-7

Share

University Coach Mark Cunningham wanted his team to keep the ball on the ground and away from Foothill running back Sean Saunders.

Marc Walker made sure Cunningham received his wish.

Walker, who rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns, led University to a 24-7 victory over Foothill Thursday night.

“We moved the ball pretty well,” said Cunningham, who watched his team rush for 216 yards. “We wanted to keep the ball with us and out of the hands of Saunders, who is one of the great running backs in Southern California.”

Saunders gained only 64 yards on 18 carries.

Meanwhile, it was Walker who looked like the great one. Walker totaled 71 yards at the end of the first half, averaging a little more than 10 yards a carry, and almost single-handedly led the Trojans (2-2) to their first score.

Walker carried the ball five times in an eight-play drive and capped it off by diving two yards for the score with 6 minutes 53 seconds left in the half. Nathan Morreale added the extra point to give University a 7-0 lead.

After a Morreale’s 36-yard field goal, Foothill (1-3) drove 68 yards in 1:09 and scored when Tim Chaix passed to Sean Amos for a 48-yard touchdown. Keo Powell’s extra point made it 10-7 at halftime.

University scored on its first possession in the second half when Brian Vail scrambled and threw eight yards to Jerry Apana in the corner of the end zone. Morreale’s kick made the score, 17-7.

The Trojans’ final score came on a 19-yard run by Walker, capping a four play, 59-yard drive.
