Manhattan Beach Youth’s Long Jump Brings 2,000 Scholarship

Manhattan Beach resident Justin Bell, a 12-year-old student at American Martyrs School, has received a $2,000 scholarship from the ARCO Jesse Owens Games. He is one of eight regional recipients. Bell placed third in the Jesse Owens national long jump finals recently at UCLA. The ARCO Jesse Owens Games is an annual youth track and field program named after the late 1936 Olympic gold medalist. More than 1 million participants compete each year.

Using a 7-iron, John Kimura of San Pedro aced the 135-yard, par 3 8th hole at the Harbor Park golf course recently. It was the second hole in one Kimura has recorded in more than 25 years of golfing.

The Great Beach Challenge, consisting of five running/swimming events, takes place Sunday at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Check-in time is 7:30 a.m. and the cost is $20 per competitor, plus $2 per event entered. Events included are a two-mile run, one-mile swim, a three-quarter mile run-swim-run, the 400-yard fin kick race and a three by 300-yard relay. Information: 453-8382.

The L.A.-Las Vegas Friendship Soccer Cup, a four-team semiprofessional tournament sponsored by the Greater Los Angeles Soccer League, takes place Sunday at Daniels Field in San Pedro. Real Limon, the Las Vegas League champion, opens play at 10:30 a.m. against Cruz Azul, runner-up in the league. At 11:45 a pair of new teams in the league, Alianza of Compton and Inter Los Angeles, play. The losers meet at 1 p.m. The winners play at 2:15 for the title.

The cities of Gardena, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach and Hawthorne are accepting applications from players for their annual youth flag football leagues. Some fees apply. Ascot Raceway plays host to its final American Motorcycle Assn. Camel Pro half-mile championship Saturday night at 8. Other events this weekend include CMC Motocross at 7:30 tonight and pro stock racing Sunday night at 6.

Open play in the sport of volleyball is being sponsored by the city of Manhattan Beach at the Mira Costa High girls gymnasium. Open play hours are 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A recreation leader is on duty at all times. Participants are asked to wear soft, rubber soled shoes. Information: 545-5621.
