AMD to Appeal Verdict: Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Advanced Micro Devices Inc. said it would appeal a federal jury’s decision that it must pay $25.6 million in damages for infringing on the patents of Brooktree Corp., a private San Diego semiconductor manufacturer. A federal jury in San Diego ruled that Brooktree was entitled to the damages because AMD had infringed on its patents for chips that control the display of color in personal computers and workstations. Brooktree contended that the infringement took place when AMD introduced a chip, called a color palette, in August, 1989, that was designed to be compatible with Brooktree’s own color palette chips.
