The United Auto Workers said today that its members approved a new three-year contract with General Motors by an overwhelming margin, setting the stage for talks with the two other U.S. auto makers.

The UAW said the pact, which provides for wage increases, improved pension benefits and a multibillion-dollar job and income security fund, was approved by 80% of those voting. It covers about 3,000 active and laid-off workers.

According to the union, production and maintenance workers approved the pact 63,963 to 15,787. Among skilled workers, 22,069 voted for the pact and 5,674 voted against it.
