Seeman Has a Good Reputation Because He Has No Reputation
Jerry Seeman, the veteran NFL referee who after 16 years will take over next year as director of the league’s 107 officials, isn’t known for being involved in many controversial plays.
So the teams “don’t really have a book on (him),” Ram Coach John Robinson said.
“And that probably speaks well for him. It’s generally assumed around the league that he was a good choice.
“In the (Ram) games he’s worked, you can see that he knows football. He knows what’s going on.”
But according to Robinson, the NFL’s coaches couldn’t recommend a chief umpire. If the officials are acceptable, they don’t spend much time evaluating them.
“The thing I like about this one is that he’s always there to explain (an adverse) call,” Robinson said. “(Seeman) comes right over and tells you about it.
“His attitude is always the same: ‘That’s the way it is, fellows. That’s the call. Now, let’s play football.’
“I don’t always agree with him, but that’s the kind of official I like.”
