Proposed Saudi Arms Purchase

The White House plan to sell Saudi Arabia $6.7 billion in arms is one of the largest weapons sales ever proposed for the region. Here are the main components, with estimated values for each item or group of weapons, that Congress will consider:

10,000 “tactical wheeled vehicles,” trucks, transports and trailers: $1.8 billion.

150 TOW II anti-tank missile launchers with night vision sights: $33 million.

150 M-1A2 tanks (latest in the Army’s Abrams series), 200 Bradley fighting vehicles (including TOW versions), 1,750 TOW IIA missiles, 207 M-113 armored personnel carriers and about 100 miscellaneous cargo carriers and logistic support vehicles: $3.135 billion.

12 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and 155 Hellfire missiles, along with night vision sensor systems, ammunition and spare engines: $300 million.

Nine Multiple Launch Rocket Systems with 2,800 tactical rockets: $64 million.

Six Patriot surface-to-air missile firing units and one training unit with 384 Patriot missiles, radar sets, launcher stations and other support equipment: $984 million.

Eight UH-60 MEDEVAC helicopters with six spare engines and other support equipment: $121 million.

The sale also includes a five-year, $307 million contract to upgrade the Saudi navy’s command, control and communications system.

The package also includes a $37-million sale of 27 M-60A3 tanks to Bahrain.
