AIDS cases rose by more than 5,000 in September, mostly in North America, Europe and Africa, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

The new cases bring the global total of reported victims of acquired immune deficiency syndrome to 288,337 in 157 countries, but the U.N. agency estimates the true total to be close to 700,000 with a further 8 million to 10 million people believed infected by the HIV virus that causes the killer disease.
