Safeway Inc.: The food retailer reported third-quarter net profit of $20.8 million, nearly three times the $7.1 million reported for the same quarter of last year. Revenue for the period was $3.5 billion, up 4.6% from last year. The Oakland-based company attributed the strong showing to better management.
