Bomb Jolts U.S. Envoy’s Home in S. Africa
A small bomb exploded early Wednesday at the home of the U.S. ambassador to South Africa but caused no injuries and little damage.
Ambassador William Swing was at home asleep when the homemade device went off at 1 a.m. at the rear of the U.S. residential compound, American officials said.
“He’s fine, absolutely fine,” said U.S. spokesman Kent Obee.
A gate post and a guard house were slightly damaged and a window was broken in another house.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack and police said they had no suspects.
The device went off a week after President Frederik W. de Klerk’s visit to the United States, the first by a South African leader since apartheid was introduced 40 years ago.
