The United States, which faces Australia next month in the Davis Cup final, must travel to Mexico in the opening round of next year’s tournament, according to the 1991 Davis Cup world-group draw.

If the United States beats Mexico, their first-round victim this year at La Costa, they will face Spain or Canada in the second round. Four-time champion Sweden, surprisingly knocked out in the first round this year by Italy, faces a tough opening round next at Yugoslavia. The Swedes could then face Austria, followed by Australia.

Boris Becker of West Germany won six of the last seven games to defeat Mats Wilander of Sweden, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round of the Australian Indoor at Sydney.

Top-ranked Stefan Edberg of Sweden beat fellow Swede Niclas Kroon, 6-3, 6-2, while No. 3 seeded Ivan Lendl rallied to defeat Finnish teen-ager Aki Rahunen, 6-0, 3-6, 6-0.

In other matches, sixth-seeded Michael Chang overcame Todd Witsken, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, Todd Woodbridge of Australia upset No. 4 seeded Brad Gilbert, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, ninth-seeded David Wheaton got past Sandon Stolle of Australia, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, and 10th-seeded Wally Masur beat Australian Davis Cup teammate Pat Cash, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Martina Navratilova defeated Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Bulgaria, 6-1, 6-3, in the Nokia Masters at Essen, Germany.

Maleeva-Fragniere has beaten Navratilova twice this year.

The tournament suffered another blow with the withdrawal of Steffi Graf, who came down with a viral infection. Monica Seles withdrew earlier.

Mary Joe Fernandez had to withdraw when she pulled a hamstring muscle while playing 15-year-old Anke Huber of Germany. Fernandez, who came replaced Seles, won the first set 6-2, but lost the second 7-6 (7-3) after suffering the injury in the third game.
