Peter R. Hill; Retired Journalist

Peter R. Hill, a retired newspaper reporter and editor who worked throughout the world, has died in Valencia. He was 71.

Hill died Tuesday of cancer, said his daughter Rosanna Hill.

Born May 14, 1919, in Singapore, Hill was raised there and in England. In the 1930s, he worked for the Straits Times in Singapore. During World War II, he worked for the British Armed Police Force and the British Ministry of Information in India. He later worked as a foreign correspondent for United Press International in Singapore, wrote for a radio station in Indonesia, was bureau chief of the Straits Times in London and editor of the Singapore Standard from 1953 to 1958.

Hill worked in public relations in Australia before coming to the United States in 1964. The next year he was hired as a reporter for the Valley News & Greensheet, the predecessor of the Daily News, where he retired as a copy editor in 1985.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Maureen Hill; daughters Rosanna Hill of Brentwood and Evaleon Hill of South Orange, N.J.; a son, Dean Hill of Palms; a brother, Guy Hill of San Diego; a sister, Violet Roebutt of Stroud, England; and two granddaughters.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel at Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park, 1218 Glendon Ave., Los Angeles. Arrangements are being handled by Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary. Donations can be made in Hill’s name to the American Cancer Society, San Fernando Valley unit.
