House and Senate negotiators approved an organic food labeling program for fruits and vegetables for inclusion in the final version of the new farm policy law. Advocates say the labeling program is a response to public concern about food safety. Growers would have to go at least three years without use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides in order to qualify for the “organically produced” seal. There would be spot-checks for residues to make sure fruits and vegetables met the standards.
