Once the game got under way, the rivalry ended. Brothers Terry and Bryan Murray both wanted to win and it didn’t matter they were coaching against each other.

Terry Murray and the Washington Capitals got the victory as Dino Ciccarelli and Peter Zezel each had a goal and two assists in a 6-4 victory over Bryan Murray’s Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night at Landover, Md.

“It didn’t feel any different,” Terry Murray said. “You look over, you recognize who it is and you can relate to it. But when it came down to it, it was just another team and another coach. It was business.”

It was the fourth time in NHL history--and the first time in 13 years--that brothers coached against each other. Terry, 40, took over for his brother as coach of the Capitals in the middle of last season and Bryan, 47, became general manager and coach of the Red Wings on July 13.

“I honestly have to say I didn’t think much about it once the game started,” Bryan Murray said. “It was just a matter of getting my guys to play. We talked enough about it. Terry and I dealt with it, and I think it’s over.”

The Capitals never trailed in spoiling Bryan’s return to the arena where he coached the Capitals for 8 1/2 seasons. He is 0-1-1 with the Red Wings.

Winnipeg 3, Edmonton 3--Jet goalie Rick Tabaracci stopped 31 shots, including a penalty shot by Jeff Beukeboom at 17:46 of the third period as they tied the defending champion Oilers at Edmonton.

Phil Housley, obtained in an off-season trade that sent Dale Hawerchuk to Buffalo, led the Jets with a goal and two assists. Brent Ashton and Doug Evans had Winnipeg’s other goals. Steve Smith, Martin Gelinas and Craig Simpson scored for the Oilers.

“Tabaracci kept us close when he had to,” Jet Coach Bob Murdoch said. “We know he has the ability. We just want to make sure he has the emotional and mental maturity to handle the pressures.”

Chicago 5, St. Louis 2--Steve Larmer scored two goals, including the 300th of his career, to lead the Blackhawks over the Blues at St. Louis.

Larmer also had an assist on Adam Creighton’s goal that broke a 2-2 tie in the second period. Geoff Courtnall and Jeff Brown scored for the Blues in the first period.

Montreal 6, Buffalo 5--Denis Savard scored his first goal as a Canadien in a victory over the Sabres at Montreal.
