IRVINE : UCI to Use Grant to Boost Overseas Study

Share

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded UC Irvine a grant of nearly $149,000 to fund a three-year program aimed at boosting the number of students in the university’s overseas education programs and broadening cultural knowledge.

The new program will use students returning from studies abroad to encourage other students to seek similar opportunities, UCI officials said.

“Participating in foreign study helps broaden their academic and cultural understanding of the world,” said Barbara Bertin, director of the new International Peer Advising Program at UCI. “The students who return from these educational experiences are a great resource to others who are . . . developing their academic goals and plans.”

The program is being funded by a $148,983 grant from the Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

UCI offers undergraduates opportunities for study at more than 85 host universities and colleges in 33 countries, university officials said.
