World IN BRIEF : SOVIET UNION : Compulsory Service Alternatives Sought

About 500 people protested outside the Soviet Defense Ministry in Moscow demanding a volunteer army and alternative military service. Many applauded as speakers from the fledgling Radical Party, one of dozens of political organizations that have sprouted under President Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s glasnost (openness) reforms, criticized the United States and the Soviet Union for the arms buildups and said the draft is now unnecessary.
