From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

A Laguna Niguel woman was seriously injured when she was struck while crossing an intersection of the Crown Valley Parkway, about a mile away from where a 3-year-old pedestrian was killed 10 days ago.

Darcel Briones, 33, sustained two broken legs and an injury to her pelvis. She was listed in serious condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.

Lt. Richard J. Olson, a sheriff’s spokesman, said Briones was struck by a car as she crossed Crown Valley at Alicia Parkway. The driver, a 21-year-old Laguna Beach man, was not cited. An investigation into the accident was continuing.

The death of 3-year-old Thomas Burge, who was crossing the Nueva Vista intersection with his baby-sitter, last week reignited community concern about speeding motorists on the thoroughfare.

Some residents have dubbed the roadway “the Crown Valley Freeway” and have called on city and county officials to reduce the 50-m.p.h limit along sections of the six-lane parkway.
