USD Defeats NC Charlotte to Claim Tournament Title

The University of San Diego men’s soccer team defeated host North Carolina Charlotte, 2-1, Sunday to win the championship of the Charlotte Classic. It was the second tournament title of the season for USD (9-1-4).

USD got goals from Leo Ronces, his fifth of the season, and Charles Adair, his fourth, and led, 2-0, until late in the game. Adair, the offensive MVP, and teammates Alex Streicek, Toby Taitano and Tom Crane were named to the all-tournament team.

UC San Diego defeated Cal State San Bernardino in a key Division III West Region game, 2-1, in San Bernardino. UCSD, ranked No. 1 in the West and No. 6 nationally, got goals from Mike Gerhardt and Ryan Nutting in the first 20 minutes to improve to 10-2-1. San Bernardino is ranked second in the West.

UCSD Coach Derek Armstrong said Triton midfielder Mike Albert was knocked out by an accidental head butt during the game and admitted to St. Bernardine Hospital for overnight observation with a concussion.

Cal State Fullerton defeated host USIU, 2-1, to improve to 4-5-2. John Molomo scored unassisted in the second half for USIU (3-7-1).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Karin Lindsay’s first-half goal was all UCSD needed to beat host UC Irvine, 1-0. Lindsay scored off a pass from Cheryl Parker at the 17:30 mark as UCSD, ranked No. 2 in Division III, improved to 8-1-1. Irvine, which had won five in a row, fell to 6-4.

Heidi Walters, Joy Angelus and Carmen Delgado scored goals as SDSU defeated Arizona, 3-1, at SDSU. The Aztecs are 4-4-1.

WATER POLO

Cal State Long Beach, ranked 10th in Division I, trailed after three periods but rallied to beat UCSD, 7-6. UCSD (3-17) had two goals each from Mike Schatz and Kevin Vance.

GOLF

San Diego State finished 13th, the best of three San Diego teams in the New Mexico State-Coca Cola Golf Classic in Las Cruces. USIU finished 15th, USD 17th. Host New Mexico won the three-day tournament.

USIU’s Brad Yzerman shot a final-round 72 on the par-72 University Course to finish at 222, tied for 19th. Tim Todd (226) was SDSU’s top scorer and finished tied for 40th. Steve Brown (230) tied for 50th for USD.

BASKETBALL

Teams are needed in the boys’ 10-and-under and girls’ 12-and-under divisions for the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball tournament to be played at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium Saturday and Sunday.
