TV REVIEWS : Valley Space Cadets Seek Easy Earth Girls

Share

“I say wow!” says lusty teen-aged space alien Bo in tonight’s premiere of “They Came From Outer Space,” having spotted a fabulous Malibu Earth babe.

“I say wow the sequel!” echoes his literally steaming brother, Abe.

Wow turn it off quick! is the likely response of most earthlings to this landlocked comedy (tonight at 8 on Channel 13), in which two space dudes fall to Earth to become gnarly Valley boys. Unsuccessful movies like “Explorers” and “Spaced Invaders” have already mined much the same premise--that is, of aliens who watch too much bad TV on their satellite dishes emigrating here and behaving like Lenny and Squiggy. This variation, sort of a Bill-and-Ted-from-Mars trip, is executed even less transportingly.

From the ersatz B-52s-type new wave theme song that opens the show to the series of car and golf-cart chases that ends it (this being an hourlong comedy in dire need of padding), “Outer Space” is lost in high-concept, low-brainer space. It seems aimed primarily at the preteen set, yet contains an inordinate amount of talk about how much the boys want to jump into the sack with their newfound blond-bimbo accomplice.
