PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAMS : Gary Gets the Call at Running Back

Share

Cleveland Gary made his first start for the Rams Sunday. By Monday, the No. 1 running back job was his. No more three-man rotation. Gary is going to get the ball almost all of the time from now on, Coach John Robinson said, after rushing for 92 yards and two touchdowns in 20 carries.

Neither Gaston Green nor Curt Warner carried Sunday, but Robinson bristled when it was suggested that the Rams might not need to keep Warner, 29.

“Let’s not kill guys off,” said Robinson, who cited Warner’s pass-blocking and pass-catching abilities. “I think he deserves as much opportunity as we can give him, but we also have an obligation to do what’s best for us.”

Despite what linebacker Kevin Greene might think, Robinson said he doesn’t believe switching Greene back and forth from the side to side on different downs is affecting Greene much. Greene rushed mainly from the left side the past two years, but now often is lined up from the right.

“We put him on our right because that’s the direction (left-handed) Boomer Esiason was coming,” Robinson said, “so strategically he was in the right place.”
