TENNIS ROUNDUP : Gomez and Chang Fall in Blizzard of Upsets at Tokyo Tournament

Fourth-seeded Andres Gomez, fifth-seeded Aaron Krickstein and seventh-seeded Michael Chang were eliminated today in the second round of the Seiko Super Tennis Tournament.

Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion trying to rebound from an injury-filled 1989 season, beat Chang, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Qualifier Thomas Hogstedt beat Gomez, 6-4, 6-4, and Scott Davis defeated Krickstein, 6-3, 6-1.

In the third set, Cash broke Chang’s service in the seventh game for a 4-3 lead. At 5-4, Cash won the 10th game without losing a point.

Gomez committed 38 unforced errors and put in only 49% of his first serves against Hogstedt’s 64%.

Davis fired 11 service aces and put in nearly 73% of his first serves in overwhelming Krickstein in 55 minutes.

In other second-round matches, ninth-seeded Jakob Hlasek beat Paul Haarhuis, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and 10th-seeded Andrei Cherkasov defeated qualifier Rick Leach of Laguna Beach, 6-1, 6-4.

Top-seeded Stefan Edberg, second-seeded Boris Becker and third-seeded Ivan Lendl had byes.

Helena Sukova and Nathalie Tauziat led the advance through the first round of the European Indoor women’s tournament today at Zurich, Switzerland.

Sukova, the No. 5 seed from Czechoslovakia, needed only 47 minutes to beat Italy’s Linda Ferrando, 6-2, 6-2. The seventh-seeded Tauziat, of France, overcame a slow start in defeating Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-1.

In other first-round matches, Austria’s Judith Wiesner defeated Cathy Caverzasio of Italy, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0; Claudia Porwik of Germany beat Julia Salnikova of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-2; Dinky van Rensburg of South Africa overcame Nathalie Herreman of France, 7-6 (9-7), 5-7, 6-4, and France’s Nathalie Guerree outlasted compatriot Catherine Suire, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2).

In the Riklis Classic at Ramat Hasharon, Israel, top-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union scored a first-round victory, beating Nicolas Pereira of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-2.

Both Chesnokov and Pereira played strong baseline games in the 73-minute match.

Amos Mansdorf of Israel defeated countryman Raviv Weidenfeld, 6-3, 6-1.
