L.A. Unified Enrolls 15,000 New Students
More than 15,000 new students have entered the Los Angeles Unified School District this year, pushing enrollment in the nation’s second-largest district to 625,461, according to figures released Tuesday.
Enrollment grew by between 2% and 3% in all areas of the district except East Los Angeles, which registered an increase of only 0.2%, in part because schools there already are so overcrowded that most new students must be bused elsewhere.
The biggest jump was in schools in the southern tip of the district--which includes portions of Carson, Gardena and San Pedro--where enrollment grew by 3%.
The statistics reflect growth throughout the school district, but not necessarily in specific areas. Students are counted at the school they attend and many are bused out of their neighborhoods.
