WORLD IN BRIEF : CHINA : Fugitive Embezzler Blamed in Hijacking
Officials said a fugitive embezzler hijacked a jetliner and caused its crash last week in Canton, killing 128. Canton’s aviation bureau and public security bureau identified the hijacker as Jiang Xiaofeng, 21, a purchasing agent for a county government office in Changsha. It said he was wanted by Chinese police for embezzling $3,600 in July. Jiang boarded a Boeing 737 in Xiamen and demanded to be taken to Taiwan, the officials said. Low on fuel, the plane landed instead in Canton, striking two planes on the ground.
