Freshman Drew Bledsoe has replaced senior Brad Gossen as Washington State’s starting quarterback.

Bledsoe, one of the nation’s top prep recruits last year, earned the starting job for his performance in a 30-17 loss to USC, Coach Mike Price said from Pullman, Wash., in a weekly telephone conference.

“I think what we’re going to do offensively in our game plan and what we want to do . . . is more the things that Drew Bledsoe does best,” Price said. “We’re going to try him out at it.”

Coming off the bench late against USC, Bledsoe threw for one touchdown and ran for another, completing six of 12 passes for 145 yards.

Price said Bledsoe lacks experience, but knows the offense well enough to win.
