Byrne Seeks to Return as Mayor of Chicago

CHICAGO —
Former Mayor Jane M. Byrne says she will hit the campaign trail again in 1991 for another run for City Hall.
Byrne said Tuesday that she has begun circulating nominating petitions. “We are absolutely having no difficulty getting signatures,” she said.
Byrne was elected mayor in 1979 but lost a reelection bid in the 1983 Democratic primary to Harold Washington. Washington, who was the city’s first black mayor, also foiled Byrne’s comeback bid in the 1987 primary.
