Compaq Computer Corp. today introduced a personal computer the size of a notebook, calling it the highest-performance machine of its size in the world.

Compaq said the computers, which feature 3.5-inch diskette drives, will cost from $6,499 to $6,999. Shipments are to begin later this month.

Compaq Chief Executive Rod Canion said he expects strong demand for the new laptop machines, which weigh 7.5 pounds and use an Intel Corp. 80386 computer chip.

“We expect to have more orders than for what we can build,” Canion said at a news conference.

Canion said the notebook-sized laptop, called the LTE 386s/20, is not overpriced as some analysts have suggested.

“It’s priced appropriately for the technology,” he said.
