A suspected drunk driver who ran a red light at 70 m.p.h. in Oxnard early Sunday caused a three-car accident that left nine people injured, including a 3-year-old boy, authorities said.

Julio R. Rodriguez Jr., 25, of Oxnard was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol in the 2 a.m. crash, Sgt. Ken Nishihara said.

Nishihara said Rodriguez was speeding south on Oxnard Boulevard when he failed to stop for the signal at 6th Street and struck a subcompact car driven by Maria Castillo, 21, of Port Hueneme.

The force of the crash sent the small car, which also carried three passengers, into a Ford LTD driven by Marcos Castillo, 22, of Oxnard, no relation to the other driver, Nishihara said. Marcos Castillo had four passengers in his car.

Eight people, including Rodriguez, were treated for minor injuries at St. John’s Regional Medical Center and released Sunday morning, a nursing supervisor said. Ricky Madera, 3, of Port Hueneme, was admitted to the pediatric unit, where he was in fair condition with a head injury Sunday night.
