Gay Center Gets $180,000 Irvine Foundation Grant
The James Irvine Foundation has awarded a $180,000 grant to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center to help with the increasing demand for its services because of AIDS.
The two-year grant will fund three new positions at the center: a government resources director, a public relations director and a volunteer coordinator. The main function of these new executives will be to help the center in its fund-raising efforts, said Torie Osborn, the center’s executive director.
“Because of the AIDS crisis, our number of clients has tripled in recent years,” she said. “We needed staff people who could concentrate on helping us get government and private grants.”
The center provides residential, legal and health services--including blood testing for the HIV virus--for clients who are usually gay or lesbian. However, the center also serves those who are not, particularly in its programs to help the homeless.
