Former Vernon S&L; Owner’s Trial Begins: Jury selection began in the trial Donald R. Dixon, the former owner of Vernon (Tex.) Savings & Loan Assn., which went under in 1987 at a cost of $1.3 billion. He is charged with conspiracy, misapplication of funds and other crimes. Jurors should be selected within two days, and lawyers are expected to make opening statements Friday. Testimony is set to begin Monday and continue three to four weeks.
