VENTURA : Council Approves 3 Housing Projects

Share

The Ventura City Council has approved three developments that will add 403 new houses to the city’s affordable housing stock.

The council Tuesday night gave the go-ahead to the three projects, which will be located just north of the Santa Clara River, in vacant lots on unincorporated territory that the city will have to annex.

On a 5-2 vote, Affordable Communities Inc. was granted permits to build 153 houses in an undeveloped area bounded by Cabrillo Village, Southern Pacific railroad tracks, the Santa Clara River and Sudden Barranca irrigation ditch. Council members Gary Tuttle and Cathy Bean opposed the project because they feared that it would damage the environment and promote more growth in the area.

On a 6-1 vote, Wittenberg-Livingston Inc. was granted permits to build 100 houses east of Saticoy Avenue, south of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks and north of the Santa Clara River. Councilman John McWherter opposed the project because he said it would place an undue strain on the city’s water reserves and sewer capacity.

The council also voted 4 to 2 to grant KNM Development Co preliminary approval to build 150 houses in a block bounded by Telegraph Road, Reata Avenue and the Franklin Barranca irrigation ditch.
