Shelby Steele on Preference

Although I do see the merits of affirmative action, its follies far outnumber them.

As a freshman at UC Berkeley, I am experiencing firsthand the effects affirmative action have on students. There is tension among Asians and whites who feel that blacks, Latinos, American Indians and other minorities don’t belong here. In such a culturally diverse campus, it seems a pity that students aren’t getting together to share and learn from one another. Instead, there are feelings of resentment and prejudice. We must stop this segregation because hate will breed hate.

As a student at Cal, I admit that it is culturally unique. That’s one of the reasons I chose to come here. But the problem of affirmative action is that it’s causing more problems.
