CAMARILLO : Negotiations Begin on School Contract

Share

Contract negotiations between officials and teachers in the Pleasant Valley School District have begun, with both sides scheduled to meet today to discuss salary and benefits.

Teachers are asking for parity in pay with the rest of the county’s school districts and for the district to pay more toward health benefits, said Ina Lea Parker, president of the 300-member Pleasant Valley Educators Assn. The Camarillo district has about 6,400 students.

“We are the fourth-lowest-paid district in the county, and the district pays only $3,900 toward our benefits, which is second-lowest in the county,” she said.

Besides salary and benefits, each side will bring up an additional issue. The teachers are asking for more time for class preparation, and the district wants to clarify the policy on teachers and other certificated personnel transferring within the district.

The teachers, in the final year of a three-year contract, have picketed the past three meetings of the board of education.

The next scheduled negotiating session is Nov. 17 and 18.
