OUT OF ORDER: As California college campuses go, UC Irvine’s is in better shape than most (B1), but breakdowns still can get out of hand: When an underground heating line to a research lab ruptured last winter, researchers scurried to keep their lab animals warm by plugging in every electric heater they could find. That overloaded the circuits, knocking out power to the lab.
