A prisoner who attacked a bailiff in Superior Court in March was convicted Monday of assaulting a peace officer and inflicting great bodily injury.
Christopher Spells, 27, of Southeast San Diego, was acquitted of attempted murder by the San Diego Superior Court jury after two days of deliberations.
After a court appearance on March 6, Spells struck Deputy Marshal Gregory Giddings, 29, who suffered a fractured jaw, a concussion and facial lacerations.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Gloria Michaels said Spells could receive a maximum sentence of eight years in state prison for this offense.
Spells also is serving a 13-year sentence for stabbing two people in County Jail.
