A Newbury Park security guard is scheduled to be arraigned in Ventura County Municipal Court Nov. 6 on charges that he stole sensitive computer equipment from a Moorpark company.

Robert Earl Elliott, 20, is suspected of stealing property valued at up to $7,000 from the Kavlico Corp., sheriff’s Detective David Lea said.

Elliott also is suspected of possessing drugs for sale after a search of his Newbury Park home Oct. 11 turned up nearly a pound of marijuana wrapped in 26 bags. The drugs were valued at about $1,300, Lea said.

The theft included a computer and software and hardware components, which contained material sensitive to the firm, Lea said. Elliott is suspected of entering a restricted area with a security card.

Investigators traced the theft through an informant who worked at Kavlico. The theft occurred during the Labor Day holiday in September.

Lea said investigators are trying to determine whether Elliott, who was released from jail on his own recognizance, intended to sell the material to industry competitors and whether he had help from accomplices.

Kavlico manufactures sensors for the automotive and aerospace industry. Its clients include the Department of Defense, company President Michael Gibson said.
