NATION : Budget Plan Splits Democrats
House Democrats split on a proposed budget package today, with about half the members resisting the Republican approach to taxing the rich and opposing further cuts in Medicare.
Democratic leaders conceded they did not have the votes to pass the plan and prepared to resume negotiations with Republicans, the Senate and Bush Administration officials.
Based on what was said during a two-hour caucus, “we’re half-way there because half the members were supportive,” Rep. Dan Rostenkowski (D- Ill.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said afterward. But, he said, “that’s not good enough” to win House passage.
