Pete Sampras, playing his first ATP Tour match since winning the U.S. Open, struggled to a three-set victory over Swedish qualifier Rikard Bergh in the Stockholm Open tennis tournament.
Sampras, who rested three weeks after the Open because he had shin splits, won the second-round match, 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (7-3), 6-3. Michael Chang beat Martin Jaite of Argentina, 6-4, 6-3.
