Bradbury : Meeting on Refuse Rates
Representatives of National Environmental Waste Co. met again Tuesday with the City Council to clarify and justify their proposed rate increases.
In evaluating the logistics and costs of refuse disposal, “you can look at every other city in Southern California, and you won’t find another like Bradbury,” said Rick Raum of NEWCO, referring to the city’s location in the foothills and canyons of the San Gabriel Mountains and the many narrow, winding and steep streets.
The company has asked for a 19% overall increase in rates that range from $7.35 a month for a single can curbside to as much as $220 a collection for large dumpsters on ranches of up to 20 acres.
Several council members were skeptical of increases close to 100% in some service categories. Councilwoman Audrey Hon called parts of the new contract outrageous.
The council asked for a 60-day extension beyond the Nov. 1 deadline to consider the complicated package. If the waste company does not accept the extension by noon today, the council will meet in an emergency session Sunday.
