GM Announces Layoffs: General Motors Corp., reacting to the drop in demand for its light trucks since oil prices skyrocketed, said it will eliminate a shift at its Flint, Mich., plant and temporarily shut down other plants in Michigan and Indiana. Nearly 10,000 workers will be temporarily laid off as a result of GM’s action. The Flint plant, which employs 4,000, will be closed for four weeks beginning Oct. 29. The elimination of the second shift in the Flint assembly plant, scheduled to take effect Jan. 2, will put 1,700 employees out of work indefinitely.
