Cash Heading Aussie Team for Davis Cup

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash heads a six-man Australian squad named today to play the United States in the Davis Cup final at St. Petersburg, Fla., Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

Cash’s teammates will be Wally Masur, Darren Cahill, John Fitzgerald, Mark Kratzmann and Richard Fromberg, Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard announced.

Fitzgerald and clay court specialist Fromberg have been added to the quartet that defeated Argentina in the semifinals in Sydney in September.

Fromberg is the highest-ranked Australian singles player at 28th in the world on the ATP Tour computer and has won two clay court tournaments this year.

Fitzgerald has been recalled to the squad after missing the contest against Argentina. He played in the first two rounds of the competition, against France in Perth and New Zealand in Brisbane, both contested on grass courts.

Cash and Masur played singles against Argentina, with Cahill and Kratzmann the doubles combination. With the final to be played on clay, Fromberg is expected to press for a starting spot.

Jason Stoltenberg, Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde have been dropped from the eight-man squad that prepared for the semifinal.

Under Davis Cup regulations, Australian non-playing captain Neale Fraser must announce his team of four players by Nov. 20.

Fraser is already in the United States, and the squad will begin practicing on clay courts in Florida on Nov. 14, Pollard said.

The United States Tennis Assn. has already named its four-man team for the final. Andre Agassi and Michael Chang will play singles, while Rick Leach and Jim Pugh will team in doubles.

Australia last won the team championship in 1986, when it beat Sweden 3-2 in the final in Melbourne. Cash was a member of that team and the team that triumphed in 1983.
