A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in the slaying of a 27-year-old San Diego man, police reported.

Angel Marquez was fatally shot Sept. 19 in front of his home in the 5000 block of Naranja Street.

Johnny McCullough was arrested shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday as police staked out his home in the 4000 block of Copeland Avenue, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.

Police were tipped to the whereabouts of McCullough, previously regarded as a suspect in the killing, by a 911 phone call, Robinson said.

McCullough is being held at County Jail downtown without bail after a brief escape attempt following a physical exam at San Diego General Hospital. Though handcuffed, he bolted when getting in the police car, Robinson said. He was recaptured by an off-duty Chula Vista officer who saw San Diego officers chasing him.

Marquez was shot while drinking in his yard with friends, police said. A group of men approached them, trying to sell a stereo, and an argument ensued. Marquez began pushing the men out of the yard when another group of men across the street began shooting at the victim and his friends. Marquez was struck in the chest and later died at a hospital.
