5 to Be Honored for Their Contributions to Education

Five Orange County women will be honored Nov. 3 at Showcase 1990 by Delta Kappa Gamma, Area XIV Chapters, an honor society for female educators, for their contributions to education.

They are Alice Eastman, who created the curriculum lab at the Garden Grove Unified School District; Ann Farmer, assistant professor of English at Whittier College; Virginia Hunt, founder of an educational firm for parents and children; Barbara Rothman, Newport-Mesa kindergarten teacher, and Kit Snider, girls field soccer coach at Santiago High School in Garden Grove.

The event will be at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park.

Fullerton physician Frank L. Amato was named Family Physician of the Year by the Orange County chapter of the Academy of Family Physicians as part of the group’s celebration of October as Family Health Month.

A physician for 23 years, Amato was named Humanitarian of the Year in 1987 by UC Irvine. He is a past president of the Orange County Medical Assn.

Newport Beach housewife Shannon Gustafson was named California Full-Time Homemaker of the Year by Eagle Forum, a national pro-family organization based in Washington.

A college graduate and mother of two, she was in Washington to receive her award along with national winner Maureen Scalia, wife of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and mother of nine children.

Judy Easterly,, a combination fifth- and sixth-grade teacher at Loyal H. Barker Elementary School in Garden Grove, has been presented the I Make a Difference Award by the Garden Grove Education Assn.

She was recognized for being the inspiration for a variety show years back that now involves 100 student performers in the yearly event that attracts hundreds of parents and community members.

She is a Cypress resident.

Brett J.-M. Dains, 14, of Capistrano Beach, who raised money and bought 15 Spanish palms that he installed to beautify the parking lot at Linda Lane Park in Capistrano Beach, was honored at a Court of Honor where he received his Boy Scout Eagle rank. He is a San Clemente High School student.

Newport Beach Fire Capt. Ron Sutherland, a Mission Viejo resident, has been named Fireman of the Year by the Exchange Club of Newport Beach.

Frank Mallory of Newport Beach was elected to his second term as president of Braille Institute in Los Angeles. Richard F. Fixa of Fullerton and Bill S. Voit of Newport Beach were named vice presidents.

The South Coast Literacy Council has graduated students from its English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program who will teach classes in centers from San Clemente to Irvine.

Graduates from the 18-hour session at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Laguna Hills are Cindy Adlpavar, Marjorie Coveney, Lillian Deutsch, Patricia A. Hearn, Garnet R. Trevino and Geneva Wulf, all of Laguna Hills; Cameron Boquet, Jan Ericksen, Jane Poskitt and Danelle Till of Mission Viejo; Lisa Fevery and Alpa Patel of El Toro; Teri Howes of Irvine; Andrea Langdon of Fullerton; Jan Maze and Ana Williams of San Juan Capistrano; Jesse and Rose Messersmith of Lake Forest; Olive Wheeler of San Clemente and Cathy Stockam of Laguna Niguel.

The graduating class at the Laguna Beach Assistance League included Ann Agan, Skip Lowe and Elsie Shepherd of Laguna Niguel; Pat Albert of San Juan Capistrano; Bonnie Cross and Katherine Hill of Monarch Beach; Erma Kerrigan of Laguna Hills; Tricia Kessler, Marilyn McKay, Susan Montonna, Lorna Shaw, Eileen Wilson and Dottie Watts of Laguna Beach, and Elaine Bonugli of South Laguna Beach.

Marcia Hendricks, Newport Beach Public Library literacy coordinator, was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the AFL-CIO for her contributions to improving the writing and reading skills of adult learners.
