World IN BRIEF : SOUTH AFRICA : 8 Blacks Killed in Gold Mine Clashes

Rival black factions battled at a gold mine compound in Orange Free State province, and Rand Mines officials reported that eight men were killed and 37 hurt. A police spokesman said the fighting began at a migrant worker hostel at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, 160 miles southwest of Johannesburg, and continued throughout the night despite attempts by security guards to restore order. Officials said they do not know the cause of the fighting.
